As each of the old friends tries to come to grips with the darkness of the past, they find themselves face-to-face with the evil triggered so many years earlier. Years later, one man attempts to understand what happened to his wife and to his friends by writing a book about this horrible night, and it’s through this process that they begin to examine the unspeakable events that have bound them in ways they cannot fathom, but that have haunted every one of them through their lives. After he invites his most fervent followers to attend a secret ritual in a local meadow, the only thing that remains is a gruesomely dismembered body-and the shattered souls of all who were present. If you’re a long time fan, you have to read this one! Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts. It has a signature Jackson flair to these complex characters, but feels different than her past books. I have read all of Jackson’s books and The Weight of Blood is truly indescribable. The New York Times bestselling author of The House of the Spirits and A Long Petal of the Sea tells the story of one unforgettable woman-a slave and concubine determined to take control of her own destiny-in this sweeping historical novel that moves from the sugar plantations of Saint-Domingue to the lavish parlors of New Orleans at the turn of the 19th century Believe me when I tell you that these 12 are just the beginning. So I’ve put together a list of 12 of my absolute favorite queer story collections from the past three years. There are so many! More come out every month! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with non-queer short story collections, but as someone who grew up hungering for queer lit, this current abundance is especially satisfying. Now that I’ve started reading short story collections again, I can see clearly what the problem was: the stories I was reading before just weren’t queer enough! These days I cannot get short stories into my bloodstream fast enough. So, over the years, they mostly dropped out of my reading life. I tried to read a lot of story collections, but I’d always find myself mildly disappointed. I didn’t used to be a huge fan of short stories. Planché himself was a British dramatist and antiquary, chiefly responsible for introducing historically accurate costume into nineteenth century British theatre. La Belle et La Bête was first published in 1740 published in La Jeune Américaine, et Les Contes Marins. Villeneuve was a French author influenced by Madame d'Aulnoy, Charles Perrault and various female intellectuals. This edition was originally published in 1858 and contains two beautiful engravings by Edward Corbould and the Brothers Dalziel. Belle's story reveals her true parentage and her life is threatened. The Beast was a prince who lost his father at a young age, and whose mother had to wage war to defend his kingdom. Although it contains the familiar plots and themes of more recent shortened versions of the tale, Villleneuve's original piece of story telling explores the back story of both Belle and the Beast. This book is 'Villeneuve's Original Beauty and the Beast' story, first translated into English by J. Kate is so gosh darn good, it’s as if Richard Carpenter had written “Close to You” with Kate in mind. The word “sappy” came to mind far too many times whilst reading this book. And, like Kate, the formerly (more) fanged town of Sunshine has also become a kinder, gentler place. So I was disappointed when the heroine of Rumor Has It, Kate Evans, turned out to be, as we say here south of the Mason-Dixon line, sweet as pie. The former, set in Sunshine, Idaho, were a bit more bracing, with more troubled heroes heroes and less honeyed heroines. A year ago, I’d have said there was a slight difference between the Animal Magnetism books and those set in Lucky Harbor. Like most of the more recent books in both series, Rumor has It is enjoyable, comforting, and congenial. Rumor Has It, the latest book in the Animal Magnetism series, echoes many of Ms. So, whatever criticisms I have of her latest, it’s clear, on some level, her work is working for me.
